Construction
Creating Neon Art requires specialized equipment. The fires generate a temperature of about 2000 degrees Fahrenheit. Several different sizes and flame shapes are used. The vacuum system is the key to longevity for Neon.
We use a Turbo-Molecular pump running at 54,000 rpm as our main pump. Colors are achieved through a combination of glass color, inert gas used to charge the tube (typically to about 100th of atmospheric pressure), and phosphors that coat the inside of some tubes. Patterns are drawn and the glass is bent by hand to exactly fit those patterns.
Here is a look into the studio in Las Cruces, NM where I fabricate prototypes and one-offs. Visitors are welcome, with notice. Contact me for more information or to schedule a visit.
