Colorful Language

‘Colorful Language’ represents Sarge’s constant tirade against Beetle Bailey in the classic comic strip.

Shock Wave

1918 Spad c. 1985

The design was gleaned from ‘Jane’s Airplanes of the World’, and is a scale model of the WWI fighter, with the addition of an agricultural spray bar under the wings.
The client loved the WWI airplane concept in a refurbished Bonanza Steakhouse restaurant. However, it was in College Station, TX, home of the Aggies. The client suggested a crop duster.
Ag planes are serious workhorses, but ugly. We compromised with the hot water PVC spray bars. The plane has a ½” square steel tube frame. Black and bronze mirror plex fuselage. 14’ long. Grey smoke plex wings 16’ wide.
All connectors and fittings were mounted internally for a seamless exterior. There was a wall mounted speed adjustment on the propeller, as well as dimmer control for the propeller, separate from another dimmer for all the rest of the neon (wing wires, running lights, and tail surround.)

The Rocket

My ‘Pro Bono’ job of 1994. (I attempted to do at least one, every year). This was an F-86 under wing fuel tank, repurposed as a rocket.
The client already had the pole sticking up from his restaurant. I suggested we make a trip to Tucson, where we found this jewel, and a pair of ‘Fowler Flaps’, at an aircraft ‘bone yard’, which I converted to wings.
After many hours of stripping and polishing, plus cutting the Fowler Flaps to wing proportions, and the proper 35 degree sweep angle, I had the wings welded on by a race car chassis builder, then painted with Imron clear coat. This was followed with carved wing tips, and the addition of truck trailer 12 volt lights on the tail, and wing tips (red, green, and white).
Topping it with a clear strobe, and a frame mount that had the rocket climbing, and turning, up it went. One of my favorites.

Corvettes

The Heartbeat of America

A two-sided Point Of Purchase display featuring the 1953 Corvette coming towards the viewer, and the 1984 Corvette going away from the viewer, on the reverse side. The hearts above, and around the respective model logos, flashed randomly.
My part with this project was consulting. The display was a Scully Design project for Naturalite Neon Sign Company, Phoenix AZ.

The Clown - 1983

Mounted in a recessed infinity box in the wall. Walking on the carpet to my office, in Austin, would light it up by a security mat sensor under the carpet.
