New Work
Zia
Sacred Symbol of the Sun
The Zia Project. Our newest works. When my wife Donna and I moved to New Mexico in 2017, it was from far east Texas, where we had spent six years helping her parents through their last years. I made a 3’ neon Zia, glass only, to help set the mood. When we arrived, and I saw ‘A’ mountain, in Las Cruces, it became ‘Go Big or Go Home’. The Zia Project was born.
The Zia Project is a 36’ tall, Neon sculpture of the Zia Pueblo’s Sacred Sun Symbol. The actual Zia Symbol is 24’ wide and 24’ tall. Bright powder coat colors and polished aluminum reflectors with Neon illuminate it at night. We have been working on this project since 2018 and have put together a highly skilled team to accomplish it. Other Zias will follow.
This First Zia will be installed adjacent to IH 10 on the way into Las Cruces from Mesquite, NM. It lights up in sequence every evening, just at sunset, and the Neon goes out every morning, just at sunrise, in a reverse sequence.
